Back from the east coast
My beautiful Alan bike is on the way. I should have it by early October. Bad news is that I don't know when I'll be able to ride it. I injured my Medial Collateral Ligament in my knee and the prognosis is bad. I may be out the whole season according to my doctor . . . but I can't believe that will happen. I intend to be back for at least a few races at the end of the season and maybe sooner. I can't wait for rehab to begin as after one week of sitting around with my leg iced and elevated I am bored. TV sucks, I've read all my magazines and books. I've surfed the net and now I just want to get on with something productive.
Anyway, I injured my leg while in Northfield, Massachusetts to attend Cyclocross camp and do a race. Unfortunately I injured my leg in the first couple hours of the camp and was sidelined for the rest of the weekend. There's nothing as much fun as flying across the country only to injure yourself! However, I did learn some great stuff in the short period of time I was able to attend the camp. I got that annoying hop step out of my remount and actually was starting to feel semi-comfortable with having my hand on the top tube as I came in to the barriers for the dismount. I would say that was nothing short of miraculous for a fairly uncoordinated person such as myself. At least the camp had fabulous vegan food for me to enjoy while I hobbled around attempting to remain optimistic about my racing season!
I also got to witness East Coast racing (photos) even if I didn't get to try it out for myself. It's a pretty intense scene which I would highly recommend that you all check out. Highlights included seeing a C field where not one single male or female racer was on a mountain bike . . . yes, indeed everyone was sporting a cross bike. Okay, one woman would have been on a mtn bike but I loaned her my bike so she wouldn't be at an unfair advantage. (She even had a cross bike on order it just hadn't arrived yet). The race was a "small" early season race which was not a part of any series but had 3 national champions in attendance along with several other big name racers.
However, I still like the Wisconsin racing scene better even if racers like Mark McCormack aren't turning out for our races. I like our mix of roadies, mtn bikers and tri-geeks riding whatever kind of bike they have. Not to mention that you don't have to deal with east coast driving to get to our races. I just have to say that I really liked everyone I met at the races but I hated everyone I met on the road. East coast drivers seem to have no idea how to drive a consistent speed. Nothing is quite as hellish as having a screwed up knee and not being able to use cruise control for your drive back to the airport because everyone on the 6-lane interstate is changing the speed they are driving every 2 minutes. If there is no construction and no accidents then there is no need for everyone to slow suddenly to 50mph on a 65 mph freeway. I'm not going to complain about Chicago drivers for at least a month!!
Watch for me at Badger Prairie hobbling about on my crutches, cursing life and running registration. I will also get some pics and video at this race to update the website. At least that will give me something interesting to do to pass the time.
