What a ride!
I wish I had a camera on my ride to work this morning as I saw some crazy stuff. My favorite was only about 4 blocks from my house. I'm riding down Drake Street just past the zoo and at the intersection where Drake turns into Grant. I see 5 cars and they are all facing different and unusual directions in the intersection and none of them can move. What did I do? I biked up onto the sidewalk and rode by the whole crazy scene. It felt so cool at that moment to be on a bike!
Yes, the intersections were crazy slippery today. Luckily when I left the house this morning Dave reminded me that would be the case. All I was thinking about was how pretty the snow looked and how excited I was to get out skiing this weekend. It only took two blocks for me to realize how right he was. I got to the first intersection (Mills/Drake) and it was totally iced up from cars. Cars suck! I think when there is snow that the roads should have a bus lane, a bike lane and a lane groomed for skiing.
I ended up having to take to the sidewalk for a bunch of the busiest intersections to avoid sliding cars and slippery conditions. The best riding was on the side streets where very few cars had driven and the snow was untouched. It is so fun riding in fresh, fluffy snow.
The snow is still coming down! Will there be enough snow that ski trails will be groomed? I feel that skiing will be perfect training for cross racing . . . seems to work for Dave. After taking almost two weeks off the bike from being sick I don't feel like I have any bike racing form left so I might as well get in a little skiing. My bike commute luckily will keep my bike skills sharps in case Providence has a crazy winter storm again.

So does this mean you're skipping Chicago ... AGAIN???
No. . . morning cross race, lunch at Chicago Diner complete with vegan shake, skiing on the way home. It sounds like a perfect day except for the part where I have to wake up insanely early to get there. The 10am start time is the biggest detractor to racing the Chicago series.
I hear you ... you can tell it was a B racer who set up our start times ... although I do like getting to pre-ride the course with the masters before everyone races on it.
