Catching Up!
So much happening and yet so little time . . .
Last weekend was the 24 Hours of Nine Mile mountain bike race. Given that I hadn't been riding much I opted to do a 4-woman 12 hour team. However, since that made me feel like a sandbagger I opted to do it as a 3-woman team with my pals Sam and Pam. Sam took the 1st lap and put us in the lead. I took the 2nd lap and proceeded to have a flat. I did a decent job repairing the flat but that put us in 3rd. Pam took the 3rd lap and kept us in a decent position. Then Sam got us back into 2nd and on my 2nd lap I got us back into 1st but not by a ton. Pam had a strong lap but we slipped to 2nd. Then Sam put in another fast lap just before dark to put us back in the lead. I then went out for the last lap, our night lap and put some more time into 2nd place (I like night riding so I usually do a good night lap). I have to say my team was completely shocked that we ended up winning by around 30 minutes (which was really thanks to Sam being a great racer even when she isn't riding much). Dave also had a good race with his team getting 2nd in their category and only missing out on 1st by 1 minute.
The rest of my time has been taken up with Jonathan Page's Planet Bike Cup. Lots happening. Working on sponsorship stuff, opening registration, paying 1,500 swiss francs to the UCI, getting the USAC permit, starting to do press releases, emailing with potential elite athletes looking for host housing, etc., etc. It's exciting but there's a lot to do!
Work is busy. Next week is the Wisconsin Bicycle and Pedestrian conference in Eau Claire so I'll be gone all week for that. I've been busy organizing that . . . sponsorships, food counts, room arrangements. It's not unlike race planning!
I've been trying to get out on the bike as well as I have bought my UCI license and plan to race on Sunday of the JP's PB Cup. I look forward to getting my *ss kicked by all the great women that I think are going to show up. Canadian national team member, former US national team member, and the usual local gals plus I'm sure a whole lot more as we start to get the word out about the equal prize payout.
