Skiing hurts!
I always forget how much skiing hurts at the beginning of the season. It's a different set of muscles and I can feel all of them. My knee is also never too thrilled the first bunch of times out as it is not used to the skating motion. Add in the tired back, shoulders and abs and it feels like I took quite a beating out there. Luckily the body adapts quickly and remembers this crazy sport.
On the upside I was pleased with everything I remembered from last year. I've never been a great skier and I ski like a biker (that would be not very well). However, I remembered all the things I'm supposed to work on -- fall onto the ski, hips forward, release the pole and bring the arms straight forward, flex the ankles, and on and on.
Usually I like to start out my season a golf course with some flat terrain but the trails at Nordic are nice and hilly. I forgot as I haven't skied there in years. I also skied off thinking that the Green trail meant the easy trail which is not at all the case. Green is just the color of the squares on the trail marker signs. Duh!
Of course that is better than what happened to Dave. I told him to ski the Blue Trail and we'd meet at the end as he is much too fast for us to skate together. He glanced at the trailhead sign and thought the mileage was listed in kilometers. He kept thinking he was really slow as it was the longest 9k he'd every skied. Then just as he got back to the end I was about to head out again and so he came along. I told him I wanted to do the Brown Trail which was .7. I went the wrong way though and we ended up on the Red trail which was 2.5 miles. He really thought it was taking us a long time to cover .7 k. It wasn't until we got back to the trailhead that he looked at the sign a second time and realized the distance was in miles. He felt much better after that.
Tomorrow night is the big MadCross Party. Hopefully a lot of people will come! The house is fairly clean, beer has been bought and I just finished the Estabrook video. Should be really fun and will put me back in cyclocross mode hopefully. Although I think Dave and I are going to take our skis on our trip to Rhode Island as it looks like there will be some ski trails open that we can stop at on the way out. We'll see how skiing works as training for bike racing.
I should be much more ready for the 24 Hours of Telemark this year.! And I'm kind of thinking I might do a ski marathon this winter. I really like the half marathon distance though so we'll see. Maybe if we get consistent snow this year so I can see more during the week.
Hope to see some of my blog readers at the party!!!!
