Running Around

Technical difficulties have kept me from uploading photos from last weekend's Dirt Retreat with Alison Dunlap. However, I think the problem is resolved and I hope to upload some tonight.

The Dirt Retreat took up last weekend. It was super fun and hanging out with such a great group of gals always leaves me super motivated for riding and life (two things that go great together). The funny part being that I really haven't been riding since then thanks to lots of rain and lots of work.

Last week I spent some time in Wisconsin Dells for work. I did get out for a run while I was there and I can report that two carloads of teenage boys hooted out the window at me (I wish I could have seen them later so I could tell them I was as old as their mothers). I also got to spend some time "networking" and I think my co-workers will vote me the lamest person ever. I can't help it if pink wine from a box and Blatz are not my style and that I would rather go running.

This last weekend Dave did the WORS mountain bike race and once again rode very strong (and brought home a medal in his age group). He's totally freaking amazing.

While he was racing on Saturday I was out trail running at Cam-Rock County Park on the mountain bike singletrack. I got in a painful 2 hours and 20 minutes of running. At 2 hours I hit the wall and it was all I could do to get in the last 20 minutes (which involved walking a couple of hills) and shuffling along. I don't know why I thought I could run that far drinking just Heed energy drink but at 2 hours I realized my plight and stopped and had a gu. That helped but it was way too late. I know these things from having run a marathon 9 years ago but it seems that I needed a clear reminder of what happens if you don't take your food seriously. I have not idea how far I ran but plenty far I would say.

On the upside of a tough run I feel even more prepared to do a 25k trail run than I did before. I survived that run and I'm still psyched for the challenge of 15 hard off-road miles. That makes me happy. It's fun to take on a new challenge. I haven't really run since I did a marathon back in '99 and my knee has bothered me the tiny amount of running I've tried to do since my ACL surgery so it's pretty cool to be out running again. I saw lots of birds and even scared up a little racoon on the trail.

Other than that I've still got some house projects going on (new windows are being installed) and some ideas in my head for other projects (turning the old windows into coffee tables and side tables). I finally got organized and froze some rhubarb so I can enjoy it this winter. I actually went out on my road bike last week and came to the realization that I'm really good at riding slowly. And as soon as I'm done with my trail run I've got to get serious about intervals as I am planning to race cross and slow riding won't cut it there!
