Climactic Conditioning

Whenever I ride in bad weather I now refer to it as Climactic Conditioning. Getting ready for whatever the end of the cross racing season brings. I've ridden in all kinds of wintery conditions lately.

However, some people seem to think that all this riding in cold, sleet, snow and such makes me "tough" or maybe "crazy" but in reality I'm a big wuss. Yesterday I did lots of cold snowy riding and it has fun moments but just as many scary moments. I'm not that hardcore but I am determined.

First I rode to work yesterday morning. I had a few moments of fear but I usually abandoned the road and went to the sidewalk then. Contrary to what many people might think I do not have a death wish and I don't like the idea of getting hit by a car. You know, if cars weren't allowed on the road then it wouldn't be very scary to ride to work on bad weather days.

Anyway, then after work I had a hair stylist appointment at Bella on Mineral Point Road on the west side of town. Contrary to what people thought when I left the office that wasn't too bad. The roads were pretty clear at that point as long as you took the lane when you needed to. I did resort to the sidewalk for one stretch of crappy road as I only had 30 minutes to get there and it was faster riding on the sidewalk.

After my hair appointment I headed to JT Whitneys (beer sponsor of the Chainsmokers) for a anti-baby shower baby shower for Jess and Jerry (Jerry of the shattered finger at Angell Park). That was the worst ride of all even though it was really short. The first part was downhill so I never got warm. Good event though as I got to see lots of my mountain bike friends that I don't get too see much this time of year. I also think that Jess and Jerry were surpised by our gift certificate for a baby trailer. Surprising people is fun!

In other news I'm trying to rally support for a 2007 UCI Cyclocross race weekend with races in Madison and Chicago. With Nationals in Kansas City in 2007 I think it would be the perfect year to do it (and it's too late for 2006 anyway). I think it is important to do everything possible to get new racers interested in the sport but I also think we need to do things to support and grow the elite side of the racing. We're fortunate to have some top level racers in the area and I think we could have even more in the future.

It's December and we have snow . . . is it cross season or nordic ski season???? I really didn't want snow until December 13 as that is when my nordic ski season begins and all this snow just makes life difficult! I'm not getting my skis out though until December 13. Nationals race on December 10 and then two days of off season and then it's time to get ready to ski race.

Life is good!
