27.6 miles
The weather on Saturday morning was perfect for skiing. Sunny, warm and abundant snow. To commemorate the great weather I skied 27.6 miles (44.4 k) at the Nordic Trails in the Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest. 3 laps of the blue loop.
Contrary to what you might think I'm actually not that great a skier and this was my first marathon distance ski. I treated it like a race except that I had to provide my own water and food. I decided to do it since I've decided to once again ski the Kortie instead of the full Birkie. Given that up until this weekend most of my ski outings have been no more than 10 or 15 kilometers I don't really think I would enjoy doing 50 hilly kilometers. And I've decided that I don't want to do the Birkie until I can have a reasonably fun time so that I don't end up hating it and never wanting to do it again. The Kortie's 28k will be plenty of hills for me.
Based on my 44.4 k day of skiing I have come to realize the following:
1. I really need to get more comfortable with the left side V1 so I don't rely on the right side so much. My right arm was exhausted at the end of the day.
2. Being able to V2 really makes skiing a long distance so much more enjoyable. I'm so glad that I can finally do a reasonable V2.
3. I really need to get the timing down on the V2 alternate for those slight down hill sections. I still don't have it quite right.
I opted to skip skiing today as I was still tired and it was very cold. Dave went out and braved the 30 below wind chill though.
Tomorrow the work in our kitchen should be almost complete. Yeah! I'm excited to get everything put back and organized. It's hard to cook even a simple dinner when some of your pots and pans are in the living room, some in the kitchen and some in the dining room. I'll have to post before and after photos soon. I want to paint when all the tile work is done but we'll see if I find time for that before 2010.
