Winning at Losing

There's no doubt in my mind that I will win the CVC Lanetern Rouge competition . . . although I only scored one point this weekend (since I beat a master's guy on Saturday) I feel confident that I will continue to suck this much the rest of the season. At least I will get a free dinner out of being the biggest loser! I realize my biggest mistake was not specifying a location that the winner would get the free dinner at . . . . I should have gone with somewhere upscale like the Magnus.

Anyway, I knew that Sunday's race was not going to go well when a big tree branch fell on my head as I was standing around chatting before the race. Good thing I had my helmet on or I wouldn't have even been able to race. As it was I had to take some ibuprofen as the impact was enough to give me a headache. That was crazy.

As to the race . . . I rode pretty well for almost one lap. That was an improvement on Saturday when I rode well for about 1/4 of a lap. I basically got lapped by everyone though . . . men, women, children, garter snakes, etc. I've never been a great Cat 2 racer but this is the worst yet.

In attempt to not seem totally pathetic I did try riding the logs on the hill. However I didn't have enough in the legs to get up and over the largest one and could only make it over the first about five logs. That was pretty much the highlight of my race.

No excuses . . . my riding is just super bad right now. That's what happens when you don't ride your bike much all summer but plan to do the Cat 1/2 cross races anyway. I'll probably be in great cross racing shape by January when I start ski racing! Even Dave is suffering as normally he gets his motivation to race cross from me and I'm not bringing it. In retrospect probably Thursday night's long ski intervals are not the way to go before double race weekends when combined with doing more running than normal (on the upside I feel great on the run-ups!).

Oh well. Cross is still cool and besides at the next race I can blame costume problems for riding so poorly! Great Halloween costume plans are in the works at CVC.
