Staying Home

I got up at 5am and needed to make a final decision about going to Chicago. The bike was ready, the winter bike shoes were set up, the toe warmers were purchased and all the clothes were packed and ready to roll.

I logged on to various road condition report websites and called some of the 1-800 road condition reports. Dave and Garett were leaving the decision up to me. Given the early hour we would have to depart to get to Montrose Harbor in time to register, change clothes, and "warm" up I decided that it wasn't going to happen. All the road reports were for snow covered and slippery and it was still snowing just south of Madison. If the race hadn't been so far or so early it would have been fun to go do it but I knew the drive was going to be not so much fun. It's just not worth the risk of accident (especially given that our car is 8.5 years old and worth nothing to the insurance company if it is in an accident).

At the time we would have been registering for the race in Chicago I was just getting out of bed and starting to make banana pancakes. That's not such a bad morning. This is the first time in 11 weeks I haven't been driving to at least one race on the weekend. It feels weird!

This will give me time to get all my stuff washed and organized for the trip to Providence. I have a crazy work schedule this week so having today to get ready will decrease the stressfulness of my week.

However, I know I will be bummed when I read all the race reports and hear how much fun everyone had at Montrose Harbor. I'll miss out on the snow racing fun . . . that's okay though as Dave would remind me, snow is for skiing.

I wonder what kind of wax I need for today . . . better check my wax thermometer!

Hate to say it Renee, but you missed perhaps the best race of the season. Snowy, cold, slippery; what more could you ask for?

snowy, cold, slippery and in Madison??? Oh well, I've still got Providence and really snowy, cold and slippery means it's time to ski. My first ski race is not that far off so it's good that cross is about to end.
