What a weekend

Those of you who live in the Madison area know we've had some crazy weather lately. Rain has moved in and instead of moving on the clouds and rain have just circled around the area. It's crazy and ensures that it is impossible to get in a ride without getting wet.

However, I'm still doing base miles and so I had plenty of riding planned for the weekend. Saturday morning Dave and I headed out for a couple hour ride. The first 40 minutes were fine with just a light mist. That was, of course, too good to last and soon it started to rain hard. It didn't take long before we were wet, wet, wet. For those of you who know the local rides we were doing the classic Goodland Park loop. We ended up cutting it short by coming straight in Lacey. Dave's fingers were cold and by the time we got back to the Arboretum we both had really cold toes.

On Sunday morning I had a 3 hour ride planned and even though the radar loop looked the same as the day before I headed out. The first part of the ride was awesome as the storm was at my back so I had a good tailwind and it only ever sprinkled. However, I could see dark storm clouds on the sides and behind me and I knew that I would be getting wet on the ride home. It basically started raining as soon as I hit Belleville which is the half way point in the ride. Luckily it didn't rain particularly hard until I was only about 6 or 7 miles from home so it didn't turn out too bad.

The rest of the weekend I was in a manic cooking phase. Here's a list of what I made this weekend:
Saturday -
Breakfast: Banana French Toast with hash browns
Lunch: Roasted Sweet Potato and Corn Chowder (I actually made this Friday) with Veggie Burgers and for dessert Strawberry/Rhubarb Cobbler (also left over from Friday night)
Dinner: Spring Vegetable Gratin (w/ yellow squash, asparagus and potatoes) and home made garlic bread
Sunday -
Breakfast: Berry Pancakes
Lunch: Roasted Sweet Potato and Corn Chowder with Arugula, Onion, Tofurkey and Pesto Sandwiches
Dinner - Mexicali Pie and Pear Salsa

The chowder and gratin all come from a great cookbook called Vegan Planet. I highly recommend it no matter what your dietary situation. The Mexicali Pie is basically a mexican style filling topped with cornbread in a casserole like dish and is from Vegetarian Times. And the Pear Salsa is something I made because I've been craving the Willy Street Coop's mango salsa but I've been trying to not buy deli food as it is so expensive.

It's more fun to make your own anyway especially since it necessitated a trip to the Asian Food Market to get fresh cilantro, mint and peppers. The Asian Food Market is a block from my house (and is one of the top 5 cool things about living in my neighborhood). It has anything for asian cooking you would ever want but also has a small amount of space devoted to middle eastern, mexican, japanese and american food. It's also cool because a lot of the food is a complete mystery and there is every kind of tofu you would ever want. It's cool to have such an awesome store only a block away. My neighborhood rocks!

So that's my weekend . . . pretty productive overall. I even saw two movies which is unheard of for me . . . Memoirs of a Geisha and Walk the Line.
