What a Weekend
So last weekend was totally crazy. On one hand it was good as I got in a good 7 hours of riding including a nice road ride to New Glarus on Saturday and some mountain biking on Sunday.
However, there was plenty of excitement. Dave's dad broke his leg while on a backcountry canoe trip in the Quetico Provincial Park. Luckily some people from Kansas City happened upon him and paddled 20 hours to the ranger station to summon help. Then a helicopter flew in and hovered over the island (because there was no where to land) and he got boosted in and was flown to Thunder Bay, Ontario to the emergency room. There they had to reset his leg which I'm sure was a great experience.
On Saturday morning Dave's mom talked to his orthopedic doctor in Eau Claire who said it would make the most sense for him to come home and get surgery after the swelling went down. (Not to mention that Canadian hospitals don't accept medicare and that is what Dave's dad has for insurance since he is retired).
Anyway, on Saturday morning I drove Dave to Richland Center (about an hour away) where his Mom was so that he could join her in the 10 hour drive to Thunder Bay. Actually Dave did most of the driving which was a great way to spend a relaxing weekend. They got there a little before midnight after a long drive.
Sunday morning Dave drove his Mom and Dad back to Eau Claire. At 4:30pm I set off for Eau Claire to get him. By 7:30pm I was in Eau Claire and after a brief stop to chat with his dad and eat a quick snack we were on the road home. We were back home by 11pm both exhausted.
Luckily with all the crazy cyclocross weekends and ski weekends we are both well prepared for insane road trips. I think driving to Thunder Bay for the weekend counts as a bit crazy.
Between riding Saturday night and then right away again on Sunday and then spending a solid six hours in the car I was a little tired. However, Dave's dad made it home safe and sound, his paddling partner (who has bad knees, ankle and back) got a float plane out of the Quetico and all is good.
