CX Nationals
Sorry for the lack of posts but I only have dial up access at the Motel 5 but next door at the Fairfield Inn I'm happy to report good wireless internet.
I raced on Friday and I have to admit that I was kind of dreading racing. On Thursday I just wasn't feeling like racing. Something about being sick and not really riding for a month had not left me feeling too confident about going up against such a stacked master's women's field.
However, I didn't come all the way here to not race so I set myself the goal of not being last. Earlier in the year I don't think that would have been such a big challenge but after the last month's lack of training it was going to be a serious undertaking.
Since I'm sitting in the parking lot of a motel I will keep this brief. I will suffice it to say that I had a good time racing. The course is really fun with lots of ups and downs and turns and not an excessive amount of straightaways (although more than I would prefer). I didn't have my usual great start as it seems that taking a month off from racing left me a little flat in what was an incredibly fast start.
On lap one I was with a little group of women and I felt that I was faster than them in the twists and turns but most of them eventually pulled away from me in the straightaways. However, I stuck with one woman and finally was able to gap her by cornering a bit better than her. I was determined to keep her behind me as I thought we might be the last two women. Actually another woman was behind us as well but I wasn't taking the chance.
By lap two I was starting to get the hang of riding my bike again and by lap three I was feeling like I remembered how to do cyclocross and actually had a good dismount/remount through the flat set of barriers. Laps three and four I felt like I knew my bike again and was enjoying racing although I have to admit that it was hard going and I could feel that I hadn't been exercising much this last month.
In the end I had fun although not a great result. Worse than last year when I was sick but last year I had the advantage of bad weather and this year it was beautiful out.
Since then I've been cheering and taking pictures of all the area riders which I will post when I get home and have internet again. Last night 18 WCA racers/racer parents went out to a local Italian place for dinner which was cool.
Alright better go as the hotel shuttle just pulled in and I don't want to get busted for poaching internet.
Oh yeah, and Dave had a great race today. No flats. Moved up well from starting somewhere around 180th.
