Hot Weekend in the Woods
I always love a weekend with temps over 90 degrees . . . especially when it's the Women's Dirt Retreat weekend. I survived and so did the participants. We did have some injuries but nothing too huge. We did have a cracked helmet, a possible sprained wrist, and lots of scrapes and bruises. However, I think all the women who attended had a good weekend and did learn something. I guess if they didn't they still ate really well and got some great prizes.
It's always a logistically crazy weekend for me trying to keep everything rolling along smoothly and on schedule. I did get out on Saturday afternoon with some of the groups. I used to try to keep everything rolling and be an instructor but that made it too hectic so now I leave most of the instruction to others. However, with Sue J., Abby S., Holly L., Renee B. and Sonia D. along with the rest of the Mad FORCs steering committee I'm not really needed to instruct.
I even got out for a ride on Saturday. Most years we do a night ride but with the hot weather and the Saris bike powered blender margaritas there was no one who took us up on it. About 11pm when all of our participants were back to their homes, hotels or in their tents and we were putting out the camp fire I suddenly had the urge to go for a ride. I think the inspiration was mostly that it was a little cooler. Once I got going I realized that the woods were crazy humid and only the open area was getting the little breeze I was enjoying but I got in an hour ride anyway. I was dripping wet when I was done but it was a fun ride out at Blackhawk all by myself while everyone else was sleeping. I tried to not shine my light into their tents and annoy everyone.
Of course, going riding until midnight caught up with me in the afternoon after the event but it was worth it. However, now that the Dirt Retreat is over I really, really need to start training in a consistent fashion. I think I got a few more mountain bike gals interested in cross this weekend which was a reminder to me of how soon it will be here.
