The state championship that wasn't . . .
I'm sure that some of you saw that I was quoted in Tom Held's blog and you're wondering how the race went for me. The answer to that is that it never happened. After missing 3 days of work and spending Saturday still feeling horrible I didn't race. On Saturday when going out to brunch left me exhausted and in need of a nap I knew it wasn't going to happen. I don't want to be sick in another couple of weeks and I have too much to do at work to miss any more days.
It was super hard to not race as I usually do better when the conditions are tough . . . and tough they were with lots of snow, rain, a small bit of hail at one point and mud. It's not that I like to be cold and muddy but those races seem to go well for me. Plus it was the state championship race which one hates to miss. Oh well. It's not worth dwelling on as I hope to over 40 more years worth of state championship opportunities (and I'm going to demand an 80+ women's title in 2048)
I was glad that I got to come out and watch and cheer though. My cheering was a little on the quiet side as my throat has been soar and I have a wicked cough at times. We didn't get there until the Cat 4 Women's/Jr race as Dave wanted me to sleep in since I was so exhausted on Saturday (from doing nothing). It also took a lifetime to shovel out our sidewalk (we live on a corner so we have a lot of sidewalk). I felt bad missing out on the Cat 4 40+ and Cat 4 races as I know they appreciate the photos. It wasn't to be though.
Here's my race report: Dave had a great day and got 4th in his race and 3rd in the 40-44 race. It was his first time getting a medal in any state championship event so I was super psyched for him. He's had a great season and ended up 4th in the series. He had a strong race as he was good in the technical corners but like me he needs a little more in the straight sections. I think he's just super psyched to be more of a contender this year and vying for the money spots.
What more does the season hold? Nationals for sure. I'm definitely going for the party more than the racing though at this point (not great fitness followed by no riding/illness for a week is perfect). The party will be fantastic though as the number of WCA racers should be huge. We've got a big block staying at the Comfort Suites and carpooling down together. Plus a ton of others are going to be there as well. I've got to get the list updated on MadCross as more are being added all the time. I need to find a place for the big group dinner as we had a great time last year in Providence. We'll see how I'm feeling and maybe Dave and I will head to Chicago this weekend.
Truth be told my training and racing thoughts are slowly turning to skiing. I've already signed up for the Birkie and the Mora. Saturday I filled out my part of the form to once again ski the 24 Hours of Telemark on an all chick team - Sisterhood of the Skis. I'm psyched for that. That's going to be ridiculously fun.
However, even though my training and racing thoughts are turning to skiing I'm still thinking about cross plenty. I'm finalizing all the details for the WCA Series banquet on January 12. Should be fun! Finishing touches for the UCI race weekend application. I've got videos to finish for the season compilation dvd. I still have WCA tshirts to distribute and a very few left to sell.
Congrats to everyone who had a great race yesterday! It's too vast a number to mention but special mention goes to my teammate "Little Jane" who was the only CVCer out racing. She took 2nd in the 10-14 girls race and capped off a phenomenal season. She's definitely CVC's Cross Racer of the Year!
