What a day for Wisconsin!
The good results keep poring in from Wisconsin riders!! Today we dominated in the Junior Girls category. Samantha Schneider from the Endeavor team won a national title in her age group and Katie Antonneau of IS/Nova won her age group as well. With Patti's win yesterday I would have to say that cyclocross is one of the hot spots for women's racing. Way to go all three!
Of course things were pretty good on the men's side as well. Tristan Schouten riding for Trek/VW took a really strong 8th place finish. He was duking it out with Mark McCormak but McCormak crashed on the final downhill into the finishing stretch and Tristan used his mtn bike skills to clean that section and take a well deserved 8th place. Bjorn Selander from Hudson WI who rides for Alan took 3rd in the 17-18 race. An untimely mechanical dropped him out of contention for the win but he battled back after a long run to the pit to get third.
Now I suppose I should write about my race. It was a tough day for me as I am feeling pretty sick and as you might expect the sickness intensifies with exercise. I started out well actually and felt fairly comfortable on the very technical course. I passed and was passed and it was good. The off cambers were icy and there were some rutted ice sections and some steep descents that were crazy slippery with more rutted mud each lap. However, my body rebelled after about 15 minutes and the next 15 minutes were bad. My head hurt, my stomach was upset and any slightly hard effort and I was gasping for breath without even riding hard. Luckily for me we only had to do a 30 minute race as I don't think I could have lasted the normal 45 minutes. On my second lap tons of women passed me and I just couldn't respond. It's a bummer as I felt like I had good skills but it was hard to ride at all and the running was really bad. However, I learned a lot from this experience and when I return I will be much smarter.
I also want to thank everyone who was cheering for me. It seemed almost like being at home as it seemed like I heard my name being called out everywhere I went.
In other news, Jim, Chris and Kurt all survived their day. It was a tough one out there that is for sure. Chris did the 30+ and Elite and he seemed pretty stoked on the day. Kurt did a really tough collegiate race and then the Elite race. Jim did the elite race but unfortunately was in a pile up right off the start so had a rough race. We also pitted for Tristan Schouten in the elite race and he rode like a rock star to an amazing 8th place ahead of cross star Mark McCormack. It was pretty cool being in the pit for the Elite race. It was pandamonium the first lap or two until everyone spread out.
Anyway, that's all from Providence for now as I feel like crap and I'm going to relax a little until the pizza we ordered is delivered. I don't even feel like going out tonight so I guess my partying plans aren't going to work out so well.
