A boring Monday post
I don't have much to say today as my weekend was not that exciting . . . I didn't do the WORS race, the state Crit championship or even the Wisport Time Trial.
That's what I didn't do but here's what I did do:
On Saturday I was suffering from an extreme lack of motivation but I got myself out for a ride in the morning anyway. My training plan called for a hard group ride so as usual I didn't do that. (Ben must find me to be a strange client as lately I never really seem to do what he has put in my training plan). However, I think I did an okay job of riding hard by myself and I found a group of tri-girls to chase down to give myself some reason for a hard effort.
Saturday afternoon Capitol Velo Club had invited Ali from We Are All Mechanics to do a bike maintenance clinic. I hosted it in the shade of my driveway. Of course it rained so I put up the pop-up tent. Good clinic and a good turn out of women. Made me realize how lame I am for not doing my own bike work given that I actually knew the stuff covered. It's funny that I wax my own skis but don't do my own bike work. I think that's because I think I can wax my skis better than the ski shops will do it but I think the mechanics will do a better job than me on the bike tech stuff. If the guys at Willy Bikes weren't always so good to me and did my work right away and really well then I wouldn't be such a girly-girl and I'd work on my bikes myself.
Sunday was visit Mom day. She is now back in the Hospital as she had this great idea to go home. Now most sensible people advised against her going home (by sensible people I mean me and my sister) but she didn't listen. The first day she was home she fell twice. The second day she fell and knocked herself out and luckily my aunt found her when she went to take her dinner. She should be going back to a nursing home today where she will have to stay until she is actually well enough to go home. Parents - what can you do with them? I think this is my payback for being such a troublesome child.
Anyway, while visting my Mom I snuck out to Hartman Creek State Park for a ride on my cross bike. The mountain bike trails there are perfect for a cross bike as there is nothing even vaguely technical. Not that I didn't notice the roots and bumps on my cross bike! They also have some super sweet new singletrack that is also perfectly designed for a cross bike. I was only able to do one loop of each trail as my Mom was worried I'd be abducted while out riding alone. She should have worried more about me having a flat and being forced to walk back to the car as I had forgotten to grab any of my tools on the way out of the house.
In my daily cross race update I don't have too much new. I picked up the gift certificates that the Market Street Diner has donated. And while I was there I had a fabulous breakfast -- a scrambler with spinach, tomato and cheese with a side of hashbrowns and their delicious biscuit.
I also have a lead on a farm to donate pumpkins . . . . what do I want pumpkins for you ask? Well, I have this idea of using pumpkins to mark the Kid's race course and then letting each kid pick out a pumpkin to take home. How cool would that be? Vermont Valley Farm is willing to donate pumpkins if their patch does well but it is too soon to know. You might wonder how you talk a farm into donating pumpkins to a sport such as cyclocross. Well, it helps if they had sons that used to race on the Chainsmoker team and it doesn't hurt to ask farmers that know Matt Kelly. It really removes the challenge of explaining the sport.
And a "shout out" to a few people in blog land:
Mark - who is getting ready for the east coast cross season. I met Mark at the Cycle-Smart clinic a few years back and bumped into him at Nats last December. He's got a great blog with fabulous vegan recipes along with his stories from the world of cross racing. Check it out!
Chris - who did great in his mtn bike racing debut at Devil's Head. Next thing you know he'll stop shaving his legs, put a visor on his helmet and be wearing a camelback! I can't wait to read his account of the weekend!

Jeremy (aka Mountain Goat), who is a semi-pro I believe, says real mountain bikers still shave their legs. And I'm not so sure about a visor -- the 'cross world would think I'm copying Todd and Troy Wells. As for the Camelbak, well ... at least it matches my Pony Shop kit!
