Rambling Thoughts
So Chris Carmichael wrote an article on Motivation vs. Inspiration. I have to say that I'm not a big fan of Carmichael (no offense to those of you who use trainright coaching but for some reason I just am not). After reading the article I realized I'm not sure I'm motivated or inspired either one. I decided the best antedote to that article was to reread Adam's article on Why do you race? On Friday I wasn't really sure of the answer to that question. Then on Friday night I went out to the movies to see Jet Li's Fearless. In it he is asked if all martial arts are equal then why fight each other. Jet Li's character responds that you fight in order to find your personal weaknesses. That's a pretty good answer.
This morning I decided that I needed a vacation from my life. Given the impossibility of that I came up with the idea of driving to Providence for Nationals via Quebec and Portland, ME. That would entail 45 hours of driving to do the round trip. On the upside it would be fun. On the downside our car already has 150,000 miles on it and everytime I do a long roadtrip I claim it will be the last one. Maybe just one more . . . . .
I also made the mistake of reading the Biowheels webpage with a description of this weekend's UCI race in Cincy. I really liked the course last year and Mitch promises even more swoopy turns and one long sand pit in place of two short ones. However, I've sworn off UCI races this year so I should just go to Lapham Peak with its boring long grass straightaways and power sections that are a lot less fun. I had a moment of weakness though where I figured if I'm going to get my butt kicked I should at least do it on a fun course. However, I think I'll save my money for the RI road trip that I dreamt up this morning. Plus I feel obligated to be at Lapham to document the racing for the MadCross readers. Dave siad he'd go to Cincy with me if I wanted . . . that was moments after I called him at work just to tell him Cincy was a mere 7 hour road trip away. Luckily I married Dave because probably no one else would have calmly said "if you want to go I'll go along."
I would like to report for the first time in months I did all of my training last week. That was nothing short of amazing . . . Ben is going to be shocked when he reads my email.

Kim would! Thankfully she's also the voice of reason -- my dad only turns 60 once!
