Some ride time
April is always the official start of my training. Of course, this year I have gotten in some pre-April rides which is not my norm but I didn't do any spring skiing. It's weird as last year I really was not enjoying cycling for most of April but this year the transition has been easier. Probably because I didn't ski as much this year. I'd rather ski more and hate April rides though.
Tonight I did the "alt-bomb" ride which combined with the Brazen Dropouts ride but with the nasty weather there was just a small group - me, Dave, Dirk, John, Jeff, Tom and Rich. The "alt-bomb" rides were for quite a few years a staple of my week all summer long. Back before the Bombay Bicycle Club dropped the ride from their schedule and the ride was known as "the bomb" it had grown to be quite a big, chaotic ride with crashes, stops by the police and other typical big, fast group rides.
however, this is the ride where I learned to go fast and ride aggressively. I don't really do the ride anymore because I have other Tuesday night commitments but I like to get out on it once in a while. It's fun to get out with the guys for a change of pace and a lot of the guys who do the ride are pretty fun (well, some are more on the funny side actually-and yes I mean Biettler).
Tonight I only rode with the group for a little bit. It was so crazy windy and I really just wanted to be a passenger of the group and not pull through. However, with the strong side winds tonight it really wasn't working perfectly and I wasn't comfortable riding in the middle of the road so I could be easily sheltered from the wind. The group was very nice and waited for me when I got gapped a couple of times but eventually I turned off and did my own ride.
Sorry I haven't been updating lately but I'm swamped at work . . . really I'm a victim of my own success so I'm not complaining. Not to mention that I was the one who came up with the timeline that I'm now killing myself to keep. I'm happy though as I got 162 grant applications which is an astounding number. I'm looking forward to reading them and seeing what people would like to do to make it easier and safer for kids to walk and bike to school. Unfortunately right now all I'm doing is sorting the applications, organizing them for photocopying and looking for things that need to be corrected. It is much easier to be busy at work though when you like you're job. It's a nice change of pace from my old job.
I've also got bike club stuff going on non-stop. It's really a very bad idea to be the president of two bike clubs. This is the last year that I'm going to do that. I think that the Capitol Velo Club has some potential women who could take over for me next year. CVC had a great start to our group rides on Monday with a big turnout of about 20 women. I think it's going to be a great season. The Mad FORCs have their first ride on Thursday but the temps are going to be in the 30s so it may be a small group.
