Assault by motor vehicle
Last night was the first Madison Practice Crit and once again I'm in charge of overseeing the corner and driveway guards.
Funny story . . . . I was covering corner 2 just off Whitney Way. About 10-15 minutes before the end of the last race this woman in an older silverish sedan pulls up. I walk over to her car to let her know what was going on and find out if she needed to access a business. She needed to get to one of the businesses just to the right of that intersection. That's not a problem but we require her to circle around the course going the direction of the race.
Suffice it to say that she was not interested in doing that and started to argue with me. I kept telling her that she could certainly get to that business but she needed to go around to get there. She could see the race was in progress as we were arguing long enough that the main pack came by more than once. However, she would not do what I asked. I could tell that she was thinking of just pulling out the wrong way so I was standing so that it would be hard for her to do that. (Not that she couldn't have easily gone straight and then quickly whipped to the right which is not an uncommon move by angry motorists).
Eventually she got really mad at me so she started inching her car forward towards me . . . inch forward . .. inch forward . . . until she finally inched so far forward that she actually tapped me with her bumper. Nice! At that point I was thinking that the police might need to be called. Once she did that she got out of the car to yell at me more and let me know that she couldn't afford to drive around the course because of the cost of gas. Of course, this entire time she has had her car on and idling. I don't think she appreciated me telling her that she could have already been where she wanted to go if she would have just listened to me in the first place.
She didn't like that so she demanded to know what gave us the right to put on the race. I explained that we had the necessary permits. She took down all the information on that as she was going to issue a complaint and get her money back for the gas she used driving around instead of going straight to where she wanted to go (what 1 km out of her way). I wanted to tell her it would be cheapest to park where she was and walk but I refrained.
Finally she got tired of arguing with me and did what I told her. My favorite part was when she flipped me off while she was driving away.
Perhaps if I had called the police she could have gotten court ordered anger management classes.

Wow. You definitely have more restraint than I. Were I in the same situation, and the car touched me, I absolutely would have called the cops -- especially given that she will probably file a complaint that will be completely one-sided, and you may end up being the bad guy.
