Weekend in Review
This weekend kicked off the WCA Cyclocross Series with racing at Lapham Peak. Since I am not currently racing due to injury (story of my life) I skipped going to the hill climb and time trial on Saturday. I'm sure Chris thought I was "boycotting" the event but as much as I like to support the cross I really didn't want to make 2 trips to Delafield in one weekend. I did go on Sunday though and so there will be plenty of photos and videos to keep people entertained.
Here's some things I have to report from the race:
1 - Dave is a rock star! Earlier this year he tells me he is going to cut back on cx racing so he can focus more on skiing. Then the last two weeks he skips ski workouts for cross practice on Wednesdays. Then he goes roller skiing this Saturday and tells me the thinks he'll be suffering at the cross race because of that. Then he gets 4th place in the 40+ and wins a little bit of $$. The first part of the race he is in a group with 2 other guys, then it is just him and one other guy and finally on the last lap he makes a move, gets a gap and keeps it all the way to the finish. Impressive! I think he likes his cross bike now (this was only his 3rd race on it).
2 - And can I just say that the Cat 1/2/3 Women's race seemed really fast. I'm in for some serious suffering (and some being lapped) when I finally make my return to racing. Glad to see all the women out racing though. It's just too bad they all looked really fast.
3 - The "fans" seemed to be nice and lively. Lapham Peak is kind of a bummer for spectating as the course is quite aways from the parking lot and the course is really spread out. However, there was still some fun and craziness to be found with beer hand ups, horn blowing, trombones, and general cow bell ringing. Makes me super excited for the racing to come at Cam-Rock and Badger Prairie.
By the time I got home from the race I was really tired from being out in the sun all day and walking around the course to get photos and video. I did get some photos organized and online but I have more to come tonight. I also have a lot of video footage including some minor crashes and the spectacular crash in which John Spaude injured his shoulder (seperated maybe). That crash was unbelievable. Hope he is doing okay. His wife was very calm when I gave her the news . . . I guess being Kip's mom she's probably seen it all.
Only a couple of weeks until Badger Cross. The flyer is online now. I hope we get a huge turnout with an awesome crowd. The elite race has a good prize list and the merchandise prizes should be pretty amazing as we have great sponsors lined up. Food will be free and drink will be flowing. I have 200 cowbells to give out. The course has been revamped and I think it will be better.
Now if I can just get healed up so I can start training again and actually do some racing. I try not to worry about it though because in the grand scheme of things it really isn't that big of a deal. I knew that going to Lapham would be kind of hard so I gave myself permission to feel sorry for myself for 2 minutes that morning. After that I reminded myself that there are worse things in life than a sports injury. Even though I couldn't race it was nice to see everyone again and hang out with all the local crossers.
