Who knew how hard it would be. . .
So I really want to make JP's PB Cup a "zero waste" event but I had no idea the trouble that would be. Well, not all of it is trouble but composting compostable plates, silverware, and cups has been the real trouble area. I contacted the Dane County recycling director . . . they can't do it but he gave me some contacts. I also contacted my friend at the Willy Street Coop and he said they struggled with finding somewhere themselves when they have events with more than they can compost themselves. I contacted an organic farmer friend but composting our stuff could run afoul of organic certifcation. I emailed a group that does event recycling here in Madison and they told me to forget it and to not do compostable and just buy recycled. I'm a determined gal but I was starting to wonder if I was going to be begging everyone I know with a composter to take some home. Luckily someone from the Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin emailed me (the county forwarded my info to her) and said their compost expert was out of town but would contact me next week. There is still hope . . . . Of course, I also need the sponsor I approached to help fund the zero waste effort to come through or it may be tough to afford all my ideas. I remain hopeful that somehow it will all work out.
Speaking of plates, food waste, etc . . . . the Market Street Diner is going to be doing the food sales at Angell Park Speedway race weekend. That should be pretty tasty. Not sure what beer is going to be sold yet but I think the speedway understands we don't just want Miller. The food and beer are going to be sold out of the pavillion as they built a stage area there this summer.
