A mistake has been made . . .
Today in the mail we received our Birkie confirmation cards . . . or in my case my Kortie confirmation card. For those of you not familiar with this ritual it is basically the card that confirms that you're entered and in which event, what style of skiing, your name and adress and also your start wave. The Start Wave being the crucial piece of info that serious ski racers spend much time discussing, bragging about, worrying about and desperately hoping to move into the elusive wave in front of them or if they are fortunate enough to be in the elite wave staying there.
Me, I have no such aspirations. I think I could happily start in the last wave forever. That way there is hope that you can pass people instead of just be passed. However, when I received my card in the mail today I realized that some is awry. Something is WRONG. My card says that I will be starting in Wave FIVE . . . yes I said FIVE (5).
How can this be correct??? I barely am able to function on skis. I have no technique. I am slow. I snow plow down downhills. Dave who is a good skier, has some technique, can ski the whole Birkie only got Wave 3.
Now I really have to ski so that I don't get run over by all the waves behind me wondering who the imposter is who got to start in an earlier wave. When I sent my registration form in back in March or April or whatever crazy month you have to register to save the most money I thought I would be Wave 7 although I thought Wave 8 would be more appropriate. Maybe Wave 6 crossed my mind as a slim possibility but I never once considered that they would put me in Wave 5.
It better start snowing right this minute!!!!!
